Under supervision of the Police Chief, this position will supervise, assign and review the work of Sworn and non-sworn staff in a contemporary environment in all phases of law enforcement to include; patrol; investigations; traffic control, training and crime prevention programs; oversee and participate in all work activities; coordinate activities with other agencies; and perform a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. This position exercises direct daily supervision over the police staff and provides complex administrative support to the Police Chief.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The successful Sergeant candidate will possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to:
- Supervise and perform a wide range of complex police department functions
- Train, assign, motivate, direct and evaluate subordinate sworn and non-sworn personnel;
- Effectively communicate and integrate organizational values into the daily work life;
- Strong administrative skills including; computer skills - working knowledge of personal computers, including word processing.
- Evaluate, develop and implement various administrative and operational procedures
- Assist in the preparation, monitoring and administration of department budgets;
- Provide appropriate information and assistance to administrative staff, other departments, outside agencies and the public;
- Attend and represent the Police Department at public meetings;
- Effectively administer safety programs;
- Assist in the preparation of special studies, organizational reviews and cost benefit analysis;
- Contribute toward the preparation of reports to the Town Council or commissions;
- Coordinate and manage the investigation and adjudication of criminal cases;
- Manage the delivery of police services and problem-solving activities;
- Receive and review written reports from subordinate personnel;
- Investigate citizen complaints;
- Prepare administrative reports;
- Administer specialized Town and department programs;
- Make arrests, write police reports and testify in court as required;
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
In addition to meeting the qualifications above, candidates considered for the position must also meet the following qualifications upon appointment:
- Three (3) years of full-time sworn service with in Law Enforcement agency
- Possession of an AA or AS degree or
- Completion of specialized college level courses in police science, including courses in supervision amounting to an Associate of Arts Degree
- Not currently on probation
- Possession of a valid California Driver’s License
- Possession of or eligible for a P.O.S.T. Intermediate Certificate;
- Free from any physical condition which would be disqualifying per P.O.S.T. standards
- Satisfactory results on appropriate written, medical, background and psychiatric examinations.
THE TOWN
Fairfax is a residential community of 7,500 population located within a 30 minute drive from San Francisco, the beach, and the mountains, in western Marin County. The Mediterranean climate makes it one of the most enjoyable living areas in the country. The Town enjoys a mild climate year round. Excellent recreational facilities are available in and around the Fairfax area. There are vast cultural and recreation resources of Muir Woods, five state parks, the San Francisco area, Oakland, Berkeley and the nearby wine country attractions.
THE DEPARTMENT
The Department consists of the Chief of Police, three Sergeants, one Detective, seven Patrol Officers, four Dispatchers and one Police Service Technician. The officers are generalists who typically handle cases from first response, through investigation, and onto final disposition. In addition, Sergeants assist the Chief of Police with administrative duties and consult closely with him in formulating departmental policies, procedures and tactics. The Department is well equipped and well trained.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
- Salary Range: $6754 – $7447 ($8255 with incentives) Appointments in pay range based upon prior experience.
- Retirement: PERS 3% @ 55. The Town of Fairfax pays the employee contribution in full.
- Insurance: Full medical and dental paid by Town for employee and their eligible dependents or Domestic Partners.
- Vacation: 11 to 20 working days annual vacation, based on the length of service.
- Holidays: Eleven paid holidays per year.
- Leaves: Personal, Family Care, and Sick Leave (120hrs a year) available.
- Uniform Allowance: The Town pays $700/year.
- Educational incentive up to 7.5% per month
- Longevity pay up to $250.00 per month based on years of Police service
- Sick leave buy back program upon retirement
- Other benefits offered by the Town include PERS Medical, Employee Assistance Program, Credit Union, and Deferred Income Plan.
SELECTION PROCESS
Examination process will first consist of a review of application material. The most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in written and oral examinations. Upon completion of the oral examination, an eligible list will be established which will be used for the appointment to the position.
Prior to an employment offer being made (if not a current employee of the Town), a thorough background check will be done. At the time employment is offered, applicants are required to successfully pass a medical and psychological examination and must be able to furnish proof of legal right to work within the United States. Candidates must not have been convicted by any state or by the federal government of a crime, the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in a federal penitentiary or a state prison.
