Fairfax Police Department Share the Road Program
Enforcement and education are combined in the Fairfax PD's "Share the Road" program.

Road Safety
Share the RoadThe Fairfax Police Department has started a Road Safety Program that combines enforcement and education in one step. The program uses the Marin "Share The Road" Program's Road Safety Brochure. This educational brochure contains "best practices" for both driver and cyclist road sharing behaviors.

The design of the "Road Safety Brochure" allows for a law enforcement officer to use it with either a driver or a cyclist. The educational piece can be used as part of a verbal warning encounter or in conjunction with the issuance of actual traffic citation.

The Fairfax program was conceived by Officer James O'Callaghan of the Fairfax Police Department and approved by Chief Ken Hughes (February 2002). They wanted a way in which they could add an educational component to their existing enforcement practices. Now, using the Road Safety Brochure, they are able to support a warning/educational interaction with a driver or a cyclist or to enhance a citation interaction with relevant educational material.

Road Safety BrochureThe Fairfax Police Department began their pilot program in April 2002. The Marin "Share The Road" Program continues to work closely with the FPD as they gain experience from their on-road educational efforts and continue to obtain valuable feedback from the driving and cycling public.
