| The Position
|
| An Officer is assigned to one of several patrol shifts. Those assignments usually rotate every four months. Officers frequently work alone and may be required to make decisions regarding appropriate courses of action without direct supervision. The Department is interested in providing a high level of training to all personnel who desire to increase their level of proficiency. Officers enjoy a 4 - 10 schedule, and are assigned to a specific patrol shift that may be rotated. |
| Essential Duties and Responsibilities
|
| Patrols an assigned area in an automobile and on foot for the prevention and detection of crime and the enforcement of laws, regulations and ordinances. Responds as dispatched to scenes of disorder, disaster, or crime to take appropriate action. Investigates and reports crimes, accidents, offenses, and damage to property. Makes arrests. Prepares cases and evidence for trial and appears in court as a witness. Participates in community relations activity. Processes and serves warrants and subpoenas, compiles identification data, performs related tasks as required, not inconsistent with the attainment of department goals. |
| Qualifications
|
Minimum age: 21 years of age at time of appointment.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Graduation from a P.O.S.T. approved Basic Law Enforcement Academy and two years of full-time work experience dealing with the public.
Knowledge of: English usage, spelling, punctuation, and interview techniques necessary to obtain investigative and personal data. Typing and computer skills - working knowledge of personal computers including word processing.
License: Possession of a valid California driver's license during all period of employment.
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident alien, or must have applied for citizenship. If military veteran, discharges other than honorable will be evaluated on an individual basis.
Other: Free from any physical condition that would be disqualifying per the standards cited in the P.O.S.T. document, "Medical Screening for California Law Enforcement". Weight in proportion to height. Satisfactory results on appropriate written, medical background and psychiatric examinations.

| Skills and Abilities
|
Ability to: Read and comprehend applicable laws, ordinances, codes and policies; express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; perform field investigations and interviews, write reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships, maintain calm and objectivity when confronted with emergencies or conflicts. Deal effectively and courteously with the public using tact and diplomacy, know how to deal with stressful, hostile or irrational persons. Perform first aid and/or CPR.
Ability to exercise of sound judgment and rational thinking under dangerous circumstances, which may include exposure to armed/dangerous persons, dangerous animals, communicable diseases, hazards of emergency driving, hazards associated with traffic control and working in and near traffic, and natural and manmade disasters.
Ability to maintain physical condition and effective audiovisual discrimination and perception appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
Possess the capability to safely operate assigned safety equipment including firearms, batons, and restraining devices. Operate two-way radio in field situations; operate effectively radar equipment, breathalyser, etc. Ability to perform routine preventive maintenance on vehicle.
Ability to perform the full range of the essential duties without restrictions. Willingness and ability to work weekends and differing shifts and successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation.

| Working Conditions
|
Physical demands will vary significantly. There will be periods of inactivity and long periods of sitting and driving; sudden increased energy requirements; walking; running; balancing; climbing; twisting; turning; falling; scaling and/or clearing obstacles. Must have adequate sensory ability to detect crimes, or other dangers to the community.
Work in emergency field situations; work in confined spaces; work in intense life-threatening situations; exposure to dangerous persons, weapons, bodily fluids, fumes, moving objects, and noise; visual, auditory, and speech capabilities required, work in inclement weather conditions; may work irregular work hours with great probability of working rotating shifts, extended hours, emergency call out, and to testify at court on days off.
Must possess the physical strength and stamina to chase and subdue fleeing persons; to arrest them if necessary; and to bring them into custody; rescue victims.

| Compensation and Benefits
|
- Salary: $4855 - 6186
- Retirement: PERS 3% @ 50, three highest years. The Town of Fairfax pays the employee contribution in full
- Insurance: Amount equal to current family premium for Kaiser Health and Delta Dental.
- Domestic Partner Benefits
- Vacation: Eleven to twenty-five working days annual vacation, based on the length of service.
- Holidays: Eleven paid holidays per year.
- Sick Leave: 88 hours per year (also Personal family care available).
- Uniform Allowance: The Town pays $650 per year.
- Overtime: At 1-1/2 time with choice of pay or time off.
- 5% nighttime shift differential
- Longevity Pay $100.00 to 200.00 depending on length of full time sworn Police Service
- Educational & Certificate Incentive pay: 2.5% to 7.5% added to base pay
- 5% FTO pay while training
- Sick leave buyback up to 50% of accumulated sick time
